I recently had the opportunity to speak with both BBC Radio Humberside and BBC Look North about a subject that’s incredibly close to home for us here in Scunthorpe: the ongoing situation at British Steel.
For us at Clugston International, this isn’t just an abstract economic issue playing out on the news. Our connection to the steel industry in this town runs deep, primarily through our sister company, Clugston Distribution Services. Many people might not realise that our relationship with the steelworks stretches back over a century. We actually celebrated that milestone not long ago – a partnership that began long before the British Steel name even existed, working alongside the various steel producers who have operated on that site throughout the decades.
When you have roots that go down that far, you develop a pretty keen understanding of just how fundamental the steel industry is to the health and prosperity of Scunthorpe. It’s woven into the very fabric of the community.
During the interviews, I wanted to share that perspective. We discussed the current challenges facing British Steel, of course, but also their immense significance as a major employer and cornerstone of the local economy. Naturally, the difficulties they encounter have knock-on effects for countless local businesses, and that certainly includes our own operations. When you’re involved in handling and transporting materials day in, day out, as we have been for generations, those operational ties are strong and direct.
Beyond the immediate business impacts, though, lies the human story. British Steel provides livelihoods for thousands of local families. It underpins so much of our region’s stability. I felt it was crucial to highlight what serious disruption, or the unthinkable prospect of closure, would genuinely mean for the people of this town and the surrounding area. The consequences would be far-reaching, to say the least.
I’m grateful to the teams at both BBC Radio Humberside and BBC Look North for giving this important local issue the airtime it deserves. It’s vital that we continue to acknowledge the significance of British Steel to Scunthorpe and keep the conversation going about how best to support its future.
